[MOVIE REVIEW] Rich Crazy Asians
“Crazy Rich Asians” follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.
Truthfully, when we first saw the trailer we were not psyched to see it but we were impressed. This romcom(we feel it was more of a romantic drama though) was really spectacular with exceptionally beautiful scenery, acting and good camera work and music. It had a lot of life lessons attached to it. Ever since we saw this movie, going to Asia has moved up our list of things to do(this movie is definitely going to something for tourism in Singapore). We also left the cinema hall with a craving for Asian cuisines which were featured in the entirety of the film.
This movie seems like your regular romance movie at first but the larger scale and flawless execution kept us engaged till the end. All the actors made the most of the characters they were to portray and the characters were relateable. Overall, the story and plot seemed decent and not too bad, it was interesting and hysterical.
We are happy that Asians have finally been portrayed as other characters apart from the regular kung-fu warriors and geeks. I’m sure every Asian American is as psyched as we are. First it was Black Panther now Crazy Rich Asians. I guess we are finally getting seats at the table.
The only problem this movie has is it’s predictability and it is a cliche love story.
That’s all from us guys. You should definitely go see this movie, it is a lovely one.
We are rating it 7/10
