Maryland Mall: Lagos’ Big Black Box

The year was 2015, I was processing my admission into the University of Lagos. Just after the Independence tunnel at Maryland heading toward Yaba was this big rectangular building under construction. Like many people I wondered what was underway until it was commissioned in 2016 and became our beloved Maryland Mall.

Born and raised on the mainland, the only mall I knew and visited was the Ikeja City Mall. After a couple of visits and extensive tours, like others I was fed up. The rest of the Lagos fun was on the Island and sincerely out of reach. So I had to contend with ICM no matter how well I knew it.

Then came Maryland mall, commissioned in 2016 by the Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. To think I was just 15 minutes away from a world class mall was just so comforting.

The mall is home to over 40 shops and four cinema halls. An array of restaurants gives you an excellent dining experience. On a land mass of over 7,700sqm, the mall is the first in Nigeria to have an underground garage. Although there are level ground parking lots, they attract a fee of N200 after 30 minutes.

The black stuff you see actually keeps light from entering the building so with the internal artificial lights inside the building, the sun never goes down. The big screen facing the Ikorodu road actually is the largest in Sub-saharan Africa. Wow, now that’s a record!

While the mall accommodates new businesses, for big brands we have the likes of Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, Shoprite, Tesla Mobile, Tecno Mobile, Chicken Republic, Samsung, The Place, Twice As Nice and LG.

Warning! Do not lie you are out of cash, because the mall has ATM almost at every bend with each shop having a POS terminal so, what else would you claim is stopping you from spending?

So at the mall you can eat, drink, buy stuffs, see a movie, window shop. No one would charge you for roaming but don’t make it seem like you’re up to something. There are CCTV cameras everywhere. I found out the hard way and no, I’m not sharing what happened.

Guys, feel free to storm the mall. When you get there, greet the guards, those guys work hard. Beckon on one of them and tell them LagosCityReview sent you. Just maybe you might see me there on a tour for the umpteenth time.
