LCR on Foodbaytv’s Streetfood Festival.
Thirteen contestants participated in the docu-reality series of foodbaytv’s street food competition powered by devon kings and supported by fanmilk which aired on 6 pan Nigerian stations. After all was cooked, done and the contestants had gone through different hurdles in the kitchen for a finalist spot at the main event tagged Streetfoodz festival. The 8th of February 2020 was set to be the date that the winner amidst the 6 finalists would be announced. A spectacular idea I feel the organisers added to this was closing in grand style, of course, it would have cost a lot unlike the usual tv competition endings with controlled audiences. Foodbay actually brought Zlatan, teni, do2dtun, mavin DJ big M with other culinary giants to the festival. Might have cost arms and legs and more than the prize money itself the positive side of me notices that these guys are obviously trying to build a long term culture in a niche that has been left unattended- STREETFOOD
I got there at the wrong time which is early for Nigerian time. I wasn’t taking note of the time but they started like later after I arrived. Do2dtun was the festival host/ compere. The scenery was really nice and asides the 13 street food brands that competed more street food vendors were admitted to showcase their food style and make sales. Already established brands like peak milk, tiger beer, Nigerian breweries, fanmilk, etc., came around.
Without emotional foreplay, after the finalist entertained the audience and chef judges by cooking a final themed delicacy to herald a million naira I need to tell you about the top 2 street kings in Nigeria. Count yourself lucky whenever you come across these street food kings.
*Chef Christopher Omowa – founder Crispy And Grills, who makes crispy fries and crispy juicy toasties, with grilled-to-perfection American Style Barbecue all made from Nigerian produce and staples. He emerged the street food king of Nigeria, if he wasn’t a millionaire before the competition, he definitely is one now.
*Chef Segun anifowose- of King Glab Cuisine, who serves up a wide assortment of street food style meals finished 2nd after Christopher. He curates an attention-grabbing menu for his brand with the marlian pasta and grilled turkey. He runs the streets in the university of Lagos and idi araba.
Overall the festival might have started late but it ended early and on a high note. At first due to the event payment system people who gnashed in anger ended the festival eating a variety of street food happily and in bliss.
