LCR Emerging Artist Review: LAYCON

Olamilekan Agbeleshebioba Massoud Al Khalifah aka Laycon is a Lagos born and bred artiste who is signed to Fierce Nation entertainment. Laycon started out his musical journey very early, developing his art from Secondary school. He got introduced to Hip￾hop and rap music and later on crossed over to other genres of music. Speaking about his musical style he says “I diversify my creativity as much as I can and strive to get more versatile. I can rap and I can sing. I also play instruments”

Laycon has a distinct taste in music that translates to his art. His musical influences include artistes like Nina Simone, Jay z, James Brown, Andre 3000, Micheal Jackson, King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Yussuf Olatunji, Nneka, Gino and IK Dairo.

In 2016, Laycon released the Young Black and Gifted EP (YBAG) which was met with very positive reviews from critics. He has worked on several projects, collaborating with producers (Lussh, Echo, Beat by Que, Finito, Tytanium, Saszy Afroshii) and artistes (Reminisce, Chinko, Deshinor, MVP, Yusuf Kan Bai, Brainee, Scarr, Terry Apala). His consistency and creativity were noticed by several record labels and in late 2018 he signed to Fierce Nation Entertainment.

In the second half of 2019, Laycon put out two weekly visual projects, titled “Any Given Monday I & II”. Laycon is set to kick off 2020 with his much anticipated “Who Is Laycon” EP already out this April.

“Who is Laycon” is the second EP by young Nigerian singer/emcee Laycon. A perfect mash-up of rap, afrobeat & pop cuts gives us a window into his versatility and skill.

This audio journey of sorts sees Laycon open up about creative conflict, love and street cred. Already a buzzing name in the Nigerian new wave hip hop/afrobeat scene with his previous releases, this E.P features collaborations with in-demand producers like Echo the Guru on ‘Come with me’ and BeatsbyQue on ‘Fierce’. ‘Who is Laycon’ is filled with equal doses of danceable and quotable moments.
